Chicoa Fish Farm

Chicoa Fish Farm is a vertically integrated aquaculture business located on the Cahora Bassa Reservoir in Mozambique.

Operations

Chico Fish Farms is the first large-scale producer of farmed tilapia in Mozambique. By minimizing operation costs through careful site selection and sustainable husbandry practices, they have achieved low feed conversion ratios. This achievement has enabled them to supply an affordable source of protein for consumers in Mozambique and neighbouring countries like Malawi.

Impact

  • Between June 2023 and September 2024, Chicoa has supplied over 18 million portions of fish to consumers (equivalent to 120g per consumer)
  • Of these, 73% were fresh fish and 8% were premium frozen fillets
  • The company has also supported around 600 informal traders (including over 250 women) to generate $500-900 of profits monthly through sales of fresh fish, heads, and bellies

Operations

Founded in 2020, this Senegalese family-owned business focuses on producing hatching eggs, day-old chicks, and broiler chickens for consumption. The company operates three farms (breeding, broiler, and hatchery) and imports and produces fertile eggs, which it hatches to produce day-old chicks and broiler meat.

Impact

  • Couvoir Amar is enhancing affordability and accessibility of chicken meat, which is a vital source of high-quality protein, essential vitamins, and minerals
  • By targeting underserved markets, Couvoir Amar is helping to improve consumption of chicken meat in Senegal which has been low (5.5–7kg per person annually)

Olkalou Dairies is a milk processing business based in Central Kenya.

Operations

The company aggregates milk from approximately 2,500 active members of a dairy cooperative, which is then taken to be stored across four cooling centres. Through value-added processing, the business produces a range of dairy products including yoghurt, mala (sour milk), cream, and pasteurized milk sold in bulk.

Impact

  • Olkalou Dairies processes 25,000 litres of milk per year
  • Processed milk is made accessible to low-income and middle-income consumers via milk ATMs and bulk milk dispensers in kiosks and small supermarkets
